# Top 6 Potting Mix/ Potting Soil recipes, with and without soil

Here is about **Top 6 Potting Mix/ Potting Soil recipes, with and without soil**, some basic information about soil and Easiest recipe of organic fertilizer. You must know about it.

Welcome to farmingocean.

Friends, soil is the base of plants. Roots of the plants develop in soil from where it sends water and other nutrients to every parts of the plants. If the soil is good then certainly the plants growing in it will also be good.

## Here is some basic information about soil

It’s the quality of soil that decides how healthy the plants growing in that soil will be and in coming days how well it will be growing. Normally, the fertile soil of the garden contains all kind of nutrients, but, if the same is used for pot or container gardening then result is not up to the expectation.

**Why does this happen ?** Friends, the soil taken from garden or field is too heavy. When we water a pot then the soil get compressed a bit towards downward i.e., it gets compacted. Due to limitation of space in pots, the soil starts hardening due to compacting.

This leads to water logging in pots for longer period of time. Due to soil compacting and water logging, the root-growth of plats is affected badly.

The chances of fungal infections increase and instead of applying fertilizers, the plants are unable to grow properly. The other problems that arise due to heavier soil is that the load over the terrace increases too much and we face difficulty in shifting the pots from one place to the other.

Due to large amount of clay in simple soil makes it sticky. For this, it sticks in pot, in hands or over the roof. So, its handling is also difficult. The conclusion is that with the help of only garden soil, trying to grow plants in pots or containers is just to waste one’s labour.

Actually, for pots or containers, we need such a soil that is light-weight, porous, well-drained with good water holding capacity, rich in organic matter and with ability to support as well as consistent, i.e., retains its properties with course of time.

A suitable potting mix for pots or containers can be prepared in two ways. The first one is to mix different types of growing media and organic matters with garden soil and thus changing its structure and composition such that it becomes suitable for pot or containers.

The second way is, not to use simple garden soil, but to use only different soil less growing media. Such potting mix is naturally suitable for pot or containers.

So friends, in today’s article, I will tell you about** six different type of recipes** to prepare** potting mix suitable for pot or containers** among from which the **three are with soil and three are without soil**. Before I begin, let me tell you that in all the recipes that follow will have one thing common and that is organic fertilizer.

## Easiest recipe of organic fertilizer

So, first of all I disclose the recipe of organic fertilizer. It’s a mixture of five different organic matters. The first ingredient is wood-ash which is in least amount.

**It should be 5% of the total volume. That means 1 part out of 20 equal parts. I’ve taken a table spoon to measure. So, I take 1 spoonful of wood ash.**

The second thing is bone meal which is made of animal-bone. If you don’t want to use bone meal, then you can replace it with PROM fertilizer or rock-phosphate.

It has to be taken in 10% amount, i.e., 2 parts. So, I’ve taken 2 spoonful of bone meal. The third ingredient is mustard cake powder. It can be replaced with cotton-seed cake, or ground nut cake, or sesame cake etc.

It should be taken in amount of 15%, i.e., 3 parts in 20 equal parts. So, I take 3 table spoonful of mustard cake. The fourth ingredient is tea leaf manure, i.e., compost of used tea leaf. It can be replaced with kitchen waste manure.

It should be taken in amount of 25%, i.e., 5 parts in 20 equal parts. So I take 5 table spoonful of tea leaf manure. Now, the fifth and the last ingredient is neem cake powder. It should be taken in 45% of the total volume, i.e., 9 parts in 20 equal parts.

So, I’ve taken 9 table spoonful of neem cake powder. Now let’s mix well all these . Friends, this mixture of organic fertilizers has to be mixed with all the recipes of potting mix.

**In how much amount?** Well, the amount should be up to 2 to 2.5% of the total volume of the potting mix, e.i., say you made it in amount of 10 liters for a pot of 10 ltrs. capacity, then 2% of 10 ltrs. is 200 ml and 2.5% is 250 ml. So, you can take it in amount of 200 to 250 ml.

As per a rough estimation, the amount of this organic fertilizer for a pot of 6 to 8 inch should be one cup, for a pot of 10 to 12 inches, two cups, for a pot of 14 to 16 inches, 3 cups and for a pot of 18 to 24 inches 5 cups.

## Recipe of Potting mix-1

**The first recipe of potting mix is with garden soil**. In this recipe, you’ve to take simple garden soil, 20%, or 1 part in 10 equal parts, coco peat 40% or, 4 parts in 10 equal parts, leaf-mold 10%, or 1 part, rice-hulls 10%, or 1 part and vermi-compost 20%, or 2 parts.

Always take the measurement as per volume and not by weight. Since, the weight of the same volume of different things may be different.

Now, add 2% of the total volume of this mixture, the mixture of the organic fertilizer that we’ve just prepared. I used this 100 ml cup to add 10 equal parts of different items, therefore, its fifth part will be equal to 2%.

So, I take the organic mixture equal to one-fifth of this cup. Now, mix all these thing well. Keep in mind while mixing that the potting mix remains lightly moist.

If the stuffs are fully dried then spray a little water. Friends, this potting-mix recipe is the lightest of all the recipes with garden soil. It is suitable for all kind of herbaceous and small plants which has a height of 1 foot or lesser.

## Recipe of Potting mix-2

If you want to prepare potting mix of this category **without using garden soil** then recipe number two of the potting-mix is for you that follows. Here, you’ve to take coco peat 50%, or 5 parts in 10 equal parts, perlite 20%, or 2 parts, vermiculite 10%, or 1 part and vermicompost 20%, or 2 parts and in 2% amount the mixture of organic fertilizers.

Here perlite can be replaced with rice-hulls and vermiculite can be replaced with leaf-molds. This potting-mix too can be used similarly as recipe number -1.

## Recipe of Potting mix-3

The third and fourth recipes of the potting mix are suitable for all those plants which have a height between 1 foot and 2.5 feet.** The third recipe of potting mix is with garden soi**l while** the fourth recipe is equivalent to the third**, **but without garden soil**. So, let’s see what is there in recipe number 3. It has simple garden soil 20%, i.e., 2 parts in 10 equal parts, coarse river sand 10%, i.e., one part, coco peat 40%, i.e., 4 parts and vermi compost 30%, i.e., 3 parts and the mixture of organic fertilizers in 2% amount of the total volume of potting mix.

## Recipe of Potting mix-4

** The fourth recipe of potting mix is soil less**, i.e., garden soil has not been used. It has cocopeat 40%, i.e., 4 parts in 10 equal parts, either rice hulls or perlite 10%, i.e., 1 part either leaf mold or vermiculite 10%, i.e., 1 part, coarse river sand 10%, or 1 part and vermi compost 30% or three parts. Besides this, 2% of the total volume of potting mix, the mixture of organic fertilizer has to be added.

**Friends, now the last two recipes, i.e., fifth and the sixth are suitable for all those big-sized trees and shrubs which are more then 2.5 feet high. Both these recipes are the heaviest version of potting mix, according to weight.**

## Recipe of Potting mix-5

**In these, the recipe no. 5 is with garden soil** while **the recipe no. 6 is without garden soil**. So, let’s see recipe no. 5 first. It has simple garden soil 40%, i.e., 4 parts in 10 equal parts, coarse river sand 20%, or 2 parts, rice-hulls 10%, or 1 part and vermi compost 30%, or, 3 parts. Besides this, the mixture of organic fertilizer has to be added in 2% amount of the total volume of potting mix.

## Recipe of Potting mix-6

Now let’s see the soil less sixth recipe of potting mix which is equivalent to the fifth recipe of potting mix with soil. It has coco peat 30%, or 3 parts in 10 equal parts, perlite or rice hulls 10%, or rice hulls 10%, or 1 part, vermiculite or leaf mold 10%, or 1 part, coarse river sand 20%, or 2 parts and vermi compost 30%, or 3 parts.

Besides this, the mixture of organic fertilizer has to be added in 2% amount of the total volume of potting mix.

Friends, this way I gave you the six recipes of potting mix in which the **recipe no. 1, 3 & 5 are with soil** and **recipe no. 2, 4 & 6 are soil less potting mix.**

All these recipes of potting mix are for general purpose i.e., **all kinds of plants can be grown except a few particular type. Don’t use these as either seed starter or for succulent plants. **

THANK YOU.
